Your description of the film oscillating between train wreck and masterpiece is exactly the feeling I had during the film. You had one extra swing of positivity because the end of the Digger storyline completely lost me. I did enjoy all the (spoiler).
I think how much the ending gels for you has a big impact on where you land with this movie. For me, it made up for (even erased) some earlier flaws. For others I know it really just deflated the whole thing.
And I’m 100% with you on Cruise never taking the easy roles, even with mission impossible he ends up putting his body on the line because of the stunts
I really hope the box office on this doesn’t stop him from taking more roles like this. I was hoping for a return of late 90s/early 2000s Cruise when I feel like he was at his most adventurous.
