Let me give you the quick lowdown on who I am, what this is all about, and why you might care…
Who am I?
I’ve been a marketing copywriter/editor for 15+ years. So the written word is my zone of interest (though I have a few podcasts too, including this one).
More importantly, I’m a certified movie junkie.
At some point when I was a kid, I found a book like this:
… and carried it around until the pages curled—desperate to know more about all the movies flickering around out there.
That feeling stills lives in me. Which is why I’m here (and probably why you are too).
What’s this all about?
I chose the name “Movie Times” because it alludes to both times spent watching movies and “Times” in the newspaper sense (a record of the times we live in). I think both of those fit.
But mostly it’s about the times we remember from the movies. The things that stick with us, reverberating for years to come—conjuring a laugh or stirring a swell of melancholy.
Margot getting off the bus in The Royal Tennenbaums. The transformation scene in American Werewolf in London. “I drink your milkshake!”
What kind of content will you find on this feed?
Features I plan to post regularly include:
Now Playing – Initial reactions to new movies hitting theaters. No spoilers, just some quick takeaways and an answer to the essential question: how fast should I get my ass to the theater?
90 From the 90s – Series exploring underrated flicks from one of the great movie decades.
Modern Classics – Films released post-2000 that already have a place in the pantheon (says me).
Three to See – Monthly trio of movie recommendations centered around a theme, individual (writer, director, actor), etc.
Get Physical – Exploring movie releases in 4K, from packaging to extras to the films themselves.
Festival Focus – Spotlighting movies from various film festivals (aiming to grow and expand this coverage over time).
I plan to publish new posts once a week—plus two or more bonus posts each month—with my newsletter going out to subscribers on Friday.
Why you might like it
Here’s why you may be interested in picking up what I’m jotting down:
Curiosity – I like trying to unravel what I watched. Why did a certain aspect of a movie hit for me? Why did something change on a second or third viewing? My brain needs to percolate or this will happen.
Simplicity — While I sometimes wish I was a little more literary, I’m far more Elmore Leonard than Henry James. So my posts will (usually) be quick and breezy.
Discovery — I want this to be a resource for people to find new movies to watch or revisit movies they’ve seen with a new perspective.
If any of that sounds appealing to you, I’d love to have a place in your reading rotation.
Can I find movie showtimes here?
No, this isn’t a place to find showtimes at your local theater. Think Moviefone’s got you covered there.
How can I talk to you?
If you read something here that sparks your synapses or makes you stand up and scream “I strenuously object”, I’d love to hear about it. Shoot me a message.
