I just finished Mr. Scorsese (which I adored) and it served as a painful reminder that I haven’t seen this film. I’ve always wanted to and your review and the doc is confirmation that I need to remedy that ASAP.
I loved this movie. I came out of the theater (Pittsburgh PA, Squirrel Hill, I believe) genuinely in awe of what Cage did in this role. And the scene where he finally ''let's the old man go" is devastating and beautiful. I had no idea who the actor playing Noel was so it didn't bother me.

I hope you check it out soon. If nothing else it’s pure Scorsese.
Scorsese and Cage should’ve worked together more! I thought the same thing when I first saw this film.
Yeah, we should've got at least three more of those collabs

Think I got there in 2002. We might have had a brief overlap.
Did you see it at the Manor Theater? I lived in Pittsburgh for a few years in the early 2000s (Shadyside) and saw a handful of movies there.
But one of the brilliant things about BOTD is how it oscillates from crazy to funny to heartwrenching.
Absolutely! I was Shadyside from about 1998-2002
